The 7-thousand year history of Haskovo ranks the town among the oldest settlements in Bulgaria. According to the archeologists, the first people in the territory of the town has originated as early as the new-stone age /about 5 000 years BC). 

Very few people know that the great revolutionary visited the town three times. In 1869, the Liberation leader came for the first time in Haskovo in order to find the more vigilant Bulgarians and to establish a secret revolution organization. 

The name of the legendary voivode – Captain Petko /1844-1900/ has a blood relation to the Rhodope Mountains and Thracia, for which freedom he fought all life.
